A reusable process for finding award space before transferring points.
Define the trip first
Start with your origin, destination, date flexibility, number of travelers, preferred cabin, and acceptable positioning airports.
Search before you transfer
Flexible bank points can be valuable because you have options. Transfers to airline or hotel programs are commonly one-way, so confirm bookable space and the final price before moving points whenever possible.
Check multiple paths
Search nonstop flights, one-stop itineraries, nearby airports, and separate positioning flights. Make sure separate tickets leave enough buffer for delays and baggage re-checks.
Compare the full cost
An award is not free if it carries large taxes, surcharges, positioning costs, or a hotel night you would not otherwise need.
Keep a backup
Schedule changes happen. Save alternative flights and understand the program's change and cancellation rules before your trip.
